Stern vs. Varvatos

My favourite icon interviews one of my favourite designers.
Did you know John Varvatos invented the boxer brief for Calvin Klein? Lots of talk about clothes, rock music and design. Interesting conversation.

The Roots for John Varvatos Fall 2011

John Varvatos has many friends in the rock and roll industry. Maybe because he throws rock-oriented parties at his stores and supplies clothing to people like Mick Jagger, Dave Matthews and even Howard Stern.
He also utilizes rock icons in his campaigns including Iggy Pop, Perry Farrell and Ozzy Osbourne. His clothes are functional but have this edgy vibe that attracts both businessmen and bikers alike. His coats hark back to retro Beatles and his silhouettes are inspired by items worn on stage by the Stones or Bowie. Very rock and roll.

So it’s great to see The Roots, one of my long-time favourites, starring in Varvato’s Fall/Winter 2011 campaign. In a review for Phrenology, a music writer referred to The Roots as one of the “greatest rock and roll bands” today. Yes, they’re black. Yes, they’re urban. And yes, they rap. But hands down, referring them to one of the best in rock and roll is an understatement. The guitar riffs and drumming in Seed 2.0 is proof that aside from being one of the best in conscious hip-hop, they’re also a solid rock group who have become cultural icons.

I ❤ The Roots.

Been scaling back on the online shopping but it doesn’t hurt to look, right?
Ssense is continually getting new things and I love that they’re Canadian-based you don’t have to have it shipped from the US. But sometimes I wonder who is buying this stuff.

Yigel Azrouel
This is an example of something my mom would make fun of. “Aiya! We call exterminata now!”

This is an example of something my mom would wear.

I’ve never been a huge Diesel fan but I thought this shirt was actually kind of interesting and not covered with logos, patches and graphics for once.

Comme des Garçons
The cut-outs are super interesting with the stark white shirt peeking out and the horizontal band that gives it this slight bondage feel but really, I would kill someone if they did this to my black Gucci suit. I can see a small Japanese architect with a pork pie hat wearing this to a meeting.

Comme des Garçons
Okay, it’s time to put these pants away. They look bad enough on women but men don’t need to include these in their wardrobe. They’re just too dumpy for my tastes.

Shades of Grey
I really want this Shades of Grey 2-1 wool coat.

For $167, you can get TWO coats! This is definitely making my online shopping sensors go CRAZY.

Converse by John Varvatos
And how sexy are these red leather John Varvatos cons with black laces (not pictured). Ya know how men love when women wear nothing but heels? I think the same thing about these on some dirty rocker dude lying naked on a whiskey-stained backstage couch. “Lock the door and bring me a beer from the fridge, Sunny.” YES.

Check out the sales here.

John Varvatos Spring 2010

Howard Stern has been talking about wearing more John Varvatos stuff lately so I decided to take a look.
I’ll be heading to New York City in a few weeks to do some hardcore shopping so JV is definitely going to get a pitstop. I have a few pieces and they’re incredibly comfortable, stylish and simply American. I’m diggin’ the new arrivals for Spring 2010. Here are my favourites:

I really love this two-toned weekender made out of (gasp) 100% goat skin. The grey section is a very cool crinkle finish with leather trim.

I absolutely love the colour of this jacket. Goji berry (gasp) lambskin motorcross. Antique zippers. $800. For that money, this jacket better paint my house!

It’s interesting that both Ralph Lauren and JV did skull and crossbone cufflinks. Sterling silver with onyx eyes. Oooooooooooh…

Green chukka boots. Calf skin (gasp) with calf skin (gasp) lining. Antique eyelets and a stitched sole. That’s right: not glued. Stiched.

I think this is the It colour for a solid tie right now. A deep plum that doesn’t look too morbid.

Waxed cotton, pinstripe lining and a neat chevron detail. An updated classic.

Studded belt with a pewter buckle. Fancy. Too bad it’s a belt for your wrist. I rather this be a real belt. For some reason, I don’t wear bracelets anymore.
